The femtosecond laser revolutionizes the way cataract surgery is performed. Until now, a blade was used to make the various cuts, both inside and outside the eye. This step is replaced by a new “bladeless” approach that allows the surgeon to improve the outcome of the procedure. By using the laser instead of the blade, the surgeon performs the major steps of the surgery with greater precision and safety than with any other existing method. On September 17, 2012, the first bladeless cataract surgery in the province of Quebec was performed at the Montreal Eye Institute by Dr. Sameh Fanous.
