    Graduating in medicine at the Université de Montréal in 1978, Dr. Sameh Fanous completed his training in ophthalmology in 1982. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

    In 1983, he was appointed assistant professor at the Université de Montréal, and as head of the glaucoma department. In 1996, he was awarded the title of honorary professor by other faculties, including the Alexandria University Faculty of Medicine.

  • 1989 First ophthalmologist in Canada

    Continually seeking to improve surgical techniques, in 1989 Dr. Fanous was the first ophthalmologist in Canada to implement the foldable intraocular lens during cataract surgery. In 1992, he was the first ophthalmologist in Canada to practise cataract surgery without anaesthetic injection and sutures – a technique that was innovative in Canada and that allowed patients to see quickly after surgery.

  • 1993 First doctor in Canada

    In 1993, he was the first doctor in Canada to offer the innovative treatment of implanting a multifocal lens, that corrects both near and distant vision, during cataract surgery. This lens had been the subject of extensive study between 1993 and 1996, during which time Dr. Fanous was involved with a group of renowned ophthalmologists in North America. He presented the results of this study at the prestigious Annual Meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery held in Seattle in June 1996.

  • 1993 - 1995 Conferences

    In 1993 and 1995, he organized conferences to lead his fellow ophthalmologists to use new ultrasound wave surgical techniques for cataract procedures. From 1999 to 2010, he organized an annual symposium for The Montreal Eye Clinic that attracted more than 300 vision experts.

     

  • 1998 First surgeon in Canada

    Also in 1998, he was the first surgeon in Canada to implant a contact lens, the ICL (implantable contact lens), as part of a North American study. With this revolutionary technology, many patients who were not good candidates for LASIK could get rid of their glasses. He was also chosen by the company Staar to train ophthalmologists across Canada to implant the lens. The ICL lens was approved by Health Canada in July 2001, and Dr. Fanous is now one of a dozen surgeons in Canada who implant this lens.

  • 1999 Honoured for maintaining a high level of excellence

    In February 1999, Dr. Fanous was honoured for maintaining a high level of excellence in cataract surgery and lens implantation in the eye by the prestigious American College of Eye Surgery. It was the first time for Quebec and the second time for Canada that the organization honoured a Canadian surgeon. Dr. Fanous joined the 300 doctors honoured worldwide since the program’s inception in 1989.

  • 2000 American College

    Dr. Fanous was again honoured by the same American College in March 2000, in recognition of his high level of excellence in surgical laser vision correction (LASIK).

  • 2000 Speaker at international conferences

    Dr. Fanous has to his credit many years of experience, during which he has performed thousands of surgeries. Throughout his practice, he has continued to distinguish himself by introducing to both Canada and Quebec several new techniques in the field of eye surgery.   • 2001 Canada’s House of Commons

    In January 2001, the Canada’s House of Commons honoured Dr. Fanous for his “outstanding medical achievements.”

  • 2002 Extensive study on multifocal lenses

    Wishing to give patients the best vision possible, in 2002 he undertook an extensive study on multifocal lenses, “Multifocal IOLs and hyperopia.” He was invited to present his findings at the prestigious annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Congress held in November 2002 in Orlando, Florida.

  • 2006 First surgeon in Canada

    In 2006, he was the first surgeon in Canada to offer bladeless LASIK treatment, a safer and more precise technique that eliminates the risks associated with the use of a surgical blade. Since 2010, he has not offered blade-based LASIK surgery to his patients..

  • 2011 Technological challenges

    In October 2011, to meet the technological challenges of the 21st century, Dr. Fanous founded The Montreal Eye Institute in Ville Saint-Laurent. With sophisticated equipment and  cutting-edge technology, the Institute offers a wide range of services covering several ophthalmic subspecialties. In April 2012, the Institute was named the best project of the year by the Ville Saint-Laurent.

    In 2012, the City of St-Laurent, for the creation of The Montreal Eye Institute, best project of the year.

  • 2012 Refractive “blade free” cataract surgery

    On September 17, 2012, Dr. Fanous performed refractive “blade free” cataract surgery with the LenSx® laser, a first in Quebec.

  • 2012 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal

    To top it all, in September 2012, Dr. Fanous received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding achievements in Canada and its peers.
